cape town for new dj's
by ross patrick on jul 10, 2003, 09:03

the red bull music academy? got their cd in the mail a few weeks back, and it's been sitting there since - oh how we slept. but what is it?

red bull, the drinks company that's supposed to give you wings have been holding these things since 1998: berlin (twice), dublin, nyc, london, sao paulo and from november 2 to december 5 in cape town this year.

they're holding two workshops: one from november 2-14 and the second from november 23-december 5. there'll be discussions, tutorials and performances covering all aspects of the music business which you can check on the website which, no lie, is a great resource: all sorts of videos - interviews, performances, workshops and musical info.

the company are promoting the event on a more lowkey basis, keeping it to the music apparently. this was borne out when i picked up jurassic 5 dj and producer cut chemist's article in the summer issue of the wax poetics journal:

cut chemist: "i still had absolutely no idea what the fuck this whole scheme was about if the call came, so be it. i'd deal with it. i had more pressing funk concerns to deal with.

"well, come the call did - and nary a month later, i was flying to munich to sit down with the red bull folks in order to discuss this experience they had devised for sao paulo, brazil. fuck me if it didn't seem perfect - you mean i can suggest to folks to speak at a gathering of music-lovers from across the world, and you'll take me seriously?... count me in..."

osulande
legendary music snapper brian b+ cross also filmed a further part of his 'keepintime' film project of drum vs turntables jam sessions at the sao paulo academy. 'brasiliantime: batucada com discos?' paired dj/ producers madlib, cut chemist, j rocc and babu with dummers paul humphrey, james gadson and derf reklaw. oh shit!

having not been fortunate to attend an academy i can only guess what you might find. perhaps the likes of adrian sherwood, charlie dark, osunlade or brazilian culture minister golberto gil - all previous participants

and what's more, us, the johnnie publics can take part. 60 lucky citizens will get to attend the event. flights, accommodation - all paid for. all you have to do is fill in a form, stitch up your own tune or mixtape and... send it!

for this you get to hang around for a month, in cape town, mix with entrants from around the globe, chat, socialise and make music with your favourite artists. all you really need is talent.

but be quick you got've until 24th july to apply.
