two culture clash - wall of sound
on paper it must have been great, superstar dj's converged with authentic jamaican dancehall reggae artists in a duet of influences. in reality this album is probably the first in a line of protest albums tackling the debate about the rampant obsession with race and homophobia that's preoccupying guardian column inches and internet message boards for 'the man's dem' with high speed internet connections. the less charitable might best describe this compilation of producers as "battyman's reprisal" it's clearly the most camp take on dancehall to date and when listened to in that context it's fucking genius.
prodigy - always outnumbered never outgunned - xl recordings
it's been a long wait hasn't it? it was difficult to predict what might come next when it appeared that the prodigy had reached their zenith with the last album and it's resultant controversy - sex pistols with computers in essex with a nod to nine inch nails.
