sloth - television
by on may 1, 2003, 00:32

right wing dude
"television, the drug of the nation, breeding ignorance and feeding radiation" intoned the disposable heroes of hiphoprisy to the tune of the same name. how prophetic these words have become. as a tool for what the, once again trendy, noam chomsky calls, "manufacturing consent" it is practically unrivalled.

a wide angle picture taken of the tumbling statue of saddam hussein which the television network presenters breathlessly presented on a scale matching the collapse of the berlin wall suggests that this was in fact, faked. a claim that has added credence when one recalls that it coincided with the evening news and morning paper schedules.

and yet we succumb to the seductive call of eastenders, reality tv and crimewatch deadening our senses as we drift completely into complacency. let's have our old chum gluttony around and get a take out with that.

one only had to watch the "all war, all of the time" broadcasting of the fox network in the u.s. or sky tv in europe, to realise that tv is a great way to keep the consuming classes in line. the national lottery has become all but replaced by reality tv shows where more people vote than at a general election but, of course, the 'network' always has the last say.

and the last laugh.
